Happy Free Printable Week!

Okay, I just made that up… but it really is what I’m celebrating this week. I have a bunch of fun printables to share with you, starting with this one.

This goes along with the March Visiting Teaching message, but it’s also just a really great scripture. I love knowing that no matter how lost I may feel or how hard things may get, the light of Christ can overcome any darkness.

I attached this note to a candle – and of course, I added some chocolate, too. I mean, what is a visiting teaching visit without chocolate???

Teaching Primary Music: Love is Spoken Here

I am the primary song leader at church, teaching music to all of the 3-11-year-old kids. We sing their favorites over and over and over again, and I teach them at least one new song every month. Naturally the older kids are much easier to teach. They can read, they catch on faster, and they remember what we learned from week to week. The younger kids are much more challenging, but that makes it even more rewarding when they finally get it! 🙂

With the younger kids (junior primary) we sing a lot of action songs so the kids can get up out of their seats and move around. Church is loooooong for those little guys. The older kids (senior primary) love to sing some of the fun, harder songs they have learned in the past, although I have been known to make them sing some of the little kids’ action songs, too.

I taught them how to sing Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes in Japanese, and now they request it. They want to learn it in more languages, so if you happen to be bilingual in body parts, hook me up!

This month I taught the kids one of my favorite primary songs, Love is Spoken Here. To help them learn the words, I found pictures that went along with key words in each phrase, printed them on white cardstock, and cut them out in heart shapes. Laminating them means they’ve lasted longer than a week, and sticking them to craft sticks gave me perfect handles.

One last thing… I printed the last page (the ending) twice so there is a copy for each verse. I taught it at the end of each verse with the appropriate notes (the first verse goes higher and the second verse stays lower). That way, they’re used to singing the right notes when we put the verses together, and it’s easier for them to know which version of the ending to sing when it’s time to harmonize. I love it when it all comes together!

February Visiting Teaching Notes

I love the visiting teaching messages this year. I wasn’t a huge fan of all of those lessons about visiting teaching. Did anyone else feel a little awkward telling someone exactly how you were failing to live up to the ideal VT standard, or was it just me?

But lessons about the divine mission of Jesus Christ? Yes, please.

I always like to bring something with me to give to the sisters I visit. Generally a note with a yummy treat – because who doesn’t love a great VT treat???

February’s message is all about Jesus Christ’s roll as the Good Shepherd.I am so grateful to know that Jesus Christ knows and loves ME as an individual. That when I wander and stray from His path, I am worth leaving the 99 to save. Because of His atonement, I will never be so lost that I cannot be found and make my way back to Him. He laid down his life for me, and now it is my responsibility to live my life for Him. My hands are His hands on the earth, and my responsibility is to lift and serve His children.

Family Home Evening Fix-Up

Every Monday night at 4018 is Family Night. We turn off the phones, ignore the doorbell, and just spend the whole evening together. Definitely my favorite night of the week.

A typical FHE looks a lot like this: We eat dinner when Mr. 4018 gets home. After cleaning it up bit (read: piling up the dishes in the sink), we gather in the family room.

Then we gather in the family room. Whoever is conducting that night gives us a warm welcome and calls on several people to choose songs for us to sing – usually our own family versions with crazy actions. My favorite is the ~~melted snowmen~~ dog pile on dad at the end of “Once There Was a Snowman.”

After an opening prayer, then comes the “family council” part of Family Home Evening. We pull out the family calendar and update the coming week and figure out how we’re juggling the chauffeur duties, church meetings, play rehearsals, practices, and games.

Next is the spotlight where one person tells us something awesome about themselves, shows us something awesome they can do (I make them play something on the piano), and then we all go around and say what we think is awesome about them. It’s awesome.

After a lesson, activity, closing song and prayer, we end with a tasty treat.

We’re good at getting together every Monday night, but it’s usually thrown together at the last minute and I think we could be doing more. That’s where this project comes in.

Our first FHE of the year was spent talking about changes we want to make and how we can make it better. We used this page to get the conversation going and take notes.

I learned some things I wouldn’t have guessed and had some suspicions confirmed. Joy requested that we never attend another sporting event for FHE. Ever. According to Bree, we need to laugh a lot because it’s a lot better than when we get “icy.”

We decided to focus more on scriptures for the lessons and that whoever is assigned the lesson, activity, and treat will talk to each other about ways to make them go together.

I’m calling part one of project FHE fix-up a success. What do you do for Family Night?
